58 In 2009, the DESY research centre in Hamburg will boast the finest x-ray facility in the world. The nearly 225 million Euro system, Petra III, will provide researchers with views of the surface of atoms that have not been previously possible. Scientists from around the world are interested in using the 2.3 kilometre long facility for the devel­opment of new medicines, among other things.
59 As largest and most significant institution for tropical medicines in Germany, the Bernhard­Nocht-Institute for Tropical Medicine in Hamburg is world-renowned. Nearly 100 scientists research malaria, tropical fever viruses, leishmaniosis, and amoebic dysentery. The institute examines 35,000 patient samples annually from all of Germany and is the national reference for tropical infection agents. As of today, over 9,000 doctors have been trained here. 60 The most modern university clinic in Europe will be created in Hamburg. The medical centre in Eppendorf will be expanded and modernised by 2009 at a cost of more than 339 million euros. 62 Hamburg is one of the greenest metropolises in Germany: Around 20 per cent of the City area consists of parks, green spaces, waterways and forests. With the Hamburgisches Wattenmeer (tidelands), the Hanseatic City is the only metropo­lis in Europe with their own national park.

In the historic Kaispeicher B in Hamburg HafenCity, beginning in mid 2008, visitors can experience 3,000 years of shipping and marine history on ten floors and 16,000 cubic metres of exhibition space.
79 The "Theater für Kinder" is the oldest profes­sional privately-run theatre for children in Germany. This stage has opened up the full diver­sity of the theatre to its young public for roughly 40 years. The theatre also has regular opera pro­ductions in its programme. 80 The first Advent wreath in the world was made by the Hamburg educator and theologian, Johann Hinrich Wichern, in 1839. Wichern cared for children from poor areas, in a house on the edge of Hamburg City. Because the children repeatedly asked when Christmas would finally arrive, Wichern thought up the idea of a wreath with 19 small and four large candles. Every day during Advent a small candle was lit, and on each Advent Sunday a large one.

81 The first animal park in the world, in which animals could live in free enclosures without fencing, was established in 1907 by Carl Hagenbeck in Hamburg. Today, around one million visitors annually visit Carl Hagenbecks animal park.
82 Hamburg's world-renowned trademark in the port, "der Michel", is not only northern Germany's most significant baroque church, the St. Michaelis Church is also one of the most popular tourist attractions in the City. Around one and a half million visitors are counted by the church each year. lt also has the largest tower clock in the Federal Republic. The minute hand measures 4.91 metres, the hour hand 3.65 metres. Each hand weighs more than 130 kg.
83 The most modern planetarium in the world is located in Hamburg. Around 380,000 guests annually visit the numerous events and star shows. A high-tech projector of the type "Universum-XI" generates a sparkling starry sky.
84 A unique tourist attraction in Germany is the Sunday fish market in Hamburg Altona. This market began in 1703 in the street, Große Elbstraße. Early-risers and night-owls buy fish, fruit, flowers and much more here every Sunday between 5 and 10 am.

99 The Hamburg City Man is the largest triathlon in the world. Elite and club athletes as well as novices all take part. The triathlon, in which almost 10,500 athletes take part, is held annually around the inland Alster lake.
